Le Cong Vinh at Hokuriku: Three Sessions, One Report, and What the AFC A Licence Actually Tests

The photograph arrived from Kanazawa at 8:12 on the morning of 6 September 2026. An artificial pitch still wet with dew, eighteen university players in two lines, and a 41-year-old man standing at an angle, a notebook in his right hand, his left hand pointing at the gap between two centre-backs. The sender wrote no caption, only four words: “Third session already.” Three sessions. That is the entire recorded workload of Le Cong Vinh during his internship at Hokuriku University, running from 6 to 15 September 2026. Attached to it is a coaching report that must be submitted to instructors of the Japan Football Association (JFA). The man in the photograph once scored 51 goals for the Vietnam national team and won the AFF Cup in 2026. At 41, he is back in a student's chair, and the three themes he has to teach are attacking, defending and quick counter-attacking. The event needs to be placed inside its proper frame. The AFC A licence is issued by the Asian Football Confederation, one step below the Pro licence. Cong Vinh's pathway has three phases: phase one completed in June 2026, phase two in September 2026, phase three scheduled for December 2026. Barring problems, the licence is awarded in April 2027, and only from there does the possibility of studying for the Pro licence open up. The internship in Japan was arranged through Koshida Takeshi, the Japanese technical director of the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF). Cong Vinh himself contacted Koshida directly. On the JFA side, President Miyamoto sent a positive message about welcoming a former Vietnamese international into their academic environment. Hokuriku University is a selective place: its first team has just played in the final round of the Japan Student Soccer Championship. This is high-level amateur football, not a recreational setting. The three themes of attacking, defending and quick counter-attacking sit at the foundation of every AFC A syllabus. Based on my experience of watching matches and coaching sessions in England, these themes correspond to the three phases of a game divided by who controls the ball: in possession, out of possession in an organised block, and losing the ball with an immediate need to switch state. Under the standard teaching syllabus, a candidate has to demonstrate the ability to design a session with a clear objective, progressing from unopposed drills to conditioned opposed practice, and closing with a small-sided game. Cong Vinh choosing exactly these three themes shows no tactical boldness. It shows he is meeting the requirement, and at A-licence level, meeting the requirement is what gets marked. The notable part lies in the practice environment. Hokuriku University's first team has just reached the national student final, which means the players there know how to press in an organised way, how to hold their distances, how to react to an instruction within seconds. An AFC A candidate needs precisely that kind of environment, because a drill only has value when the people executing it are good enough to break it. But the data needed to judge quality is absent. There is no session duration, no specific drill type, no player feedback, no note on what he adjusted between blocks. The report submitted to the JFA is the only quality-control mechanism, and it sits with JFA instructors. In other words, an independent assessment of his coaching ability does not yet exist in public form. I keep the rhythm for a team by writing down even the things nobody wants to read. On the question of location, Cong Vinh chose Japan over studying in Vietnam. His stated reasons are the instructor-to-candidate ratio and a more up-to-date curriculum, plus a desire to expand his network. Seen at system level, this indicates that the VFF has a technical-transfer channel with the JFA, and that channel runs through one specific individual, Koshida. I once wrote: “On the night Colombia missed in the shootout, I did not record the goals, I recorded the tears of an entire community.” Cong Vinh is now doing something similar on the other side of the touchline: he no longer scores, he has to record the structure that makes a goal possible. When Pep's diamond turns the page, I suddenly realise I am rewriting history in ink, not in notes. But at Hokuriku there is no diamond to turn a page of. There are eighteen university players and one man who has to explain why they must drop four metres. One professional detail caught my attention: a striker learning how to teach defending. Cong Vinh scored 51 goals at international level; he was never the organiser of a defensive block at the peak of his career. Of the three themes, two lean on structures he did not directly experience at the top. At AFC A level, candidates do not get to choose the part they like. That is the real test, and it does not lie in the names of the three themes. The transmission chain here is fairly clear. Upstream is youth development and former Vietnam internationals. Midstream is the JFA and VFF coaching infrastructure. Downstream is domestic coaching quality and Japan-Vietnam relations. The short-term impact is small, because this is an individual education activity. The medium-term impact is moderate, if he becomes a model that leads other former internationals to seek licences abroad. The long-term impact only matters if he joins the VFF technical apparatus or leads a professional team. Domestic media read this internship as a turning point, even as preparation for the national team head coach's chair in future. That is projection. A ten-day internship with three sessions coached, inside a three-phase licence course, is academic coursework. The only verified data is course progress, not managerial ability. Another blind spot: the assumption that studying in Japan means higher quality than studying in Vietnam. His stated reasons sound reasonable, but the choice could also be about intake schedules, about avoiding domestic attention, about networks. That does not make the choice wrong. It only means the conclusion that “Japan beats Vietnam” has not been demonstrated by any data in the public record. There is one further blind spot, and it concerns pressure. The level of public pressure around Cong Vinh is currently low, and it is low partly because the JFA proactively issued a positive message. That kindness is good for his image, but it also blurs the hard question: if his report fails to satisfy JFA instructors, phase three is delayed, and the Pro licence path slips with it. No signal suggests that will happen. But no signal suggests it will not. When the stadium echoes with the sound of absence, I understand that football is nothing but a conversation between people. A licence is only permission to enter that conversation. What needs watching is not his flight back to Vietnam, but the course result in April 2027, the first coaching job he takes, and how many former Vietnam internationals follow the same road in the next two years. Those three signals can say what three sessions in Kanazawa cannot yet say.
