Honda Center and the 2028 Olympic rehearsal: volleyball steps outside the host city

Anaheim, California. Honda Center, the 18,000-seat arena of the Anaheim Ducks ice hockey team, has been confirmed as the venue for indoor volleyball at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games. One year before the Games, the same arena is expected to host a major international tournament, treated as a full rehearsal for lighting, camera positions, circulation flows and refereeing operations. For the first time in history, Olympic volleyball will not be played within the boundaries of the host city.

The distance on the map is the easiest part to see. Anaheim sits nearly 50 kilometres south of downtown Los Angeles, while the LA28 athletes' village is located on the campus of the University of California, Los Angeles. A volleyball match lasts two hours, but the journey to reach that match is counted in half a day of travel, plus warm-up time, recovery and technical training sessions held elsewhere.

From Maracanãzinho to Honda Center

At previous Olympic Games, indoor volleyball always sat in the core of the host city. In 2026, Maracanãzinho in Rio de Janeiro was the name attached to every moment of the sport. Tokyo 2026 took place at Ariake Arena, Paris 2026 at South Paris Arena. Those venues were chosen because they were close to the athletes' village, close to transport networks and close to media attention.

LA28 chose a different route. The organising committee set the goal of reusing existing structures and cutting construction costs. Honda Center satisfies that: large capacity, complete broadcast infrastructure, extensive parking. But the technical criteria for an ice hockey arena and those for an Olympic volleyball arena do not fully overlap. Ceiling height, the free space behind the boundary lines, the lighting system and the ability to control air flows all have to be recalculated.

The technical details that decide match quality

Across years of following domestic and international competitions, I have noticed one thing: spectators remember the spike, but players remember the ceiling. A low ceiling makes defensive trajectories die in mid-air in a very different way. The longer the free space behind the end line, the greater the chance a dig survives.

At Honda Center, conditions are expected to be adjusted to elite competition standards: the free zone behind the end line and the lateral corridors are what decide the quality of digs, not the power of the spike. The air conditioning of an enclosed arena removes wind, yet creates cool air currents that can bend the flight of a jump serve by a few centimetres near the end line. The road to Anaheim 2028 therefore does not run through a single match, but through several seasons of accumulating ranking points, facing strong opponents and enduring a heavy schedule.

What few people mention: broadcast rights and time zones

NBC and Peacock hold the broadcast rights in the United States. For Vietnamese audiences, the 14-hour time difference means a match played at 19:00 in California appears on screen at 09:00 the next morning. Olympic women's volleyball, the most-watched team sport among women's events, is usually scheduled earlier than the men's final. The trophy does not distinguish gender; only the spotlight does.

The rehearsal a year before the Olympics therefore carries two meanings. For the organisers, it is a free technical test of operations and broadcasting. For the athletes, it is a real tournament, with ranking points, with injuries, and with Olympic places that can be affected.

What is changing

Women's volleyball in the United States is entering a rare growth cycle. NCAA college volleyball is drawing record audiences, and newly launched domestic professional leagues are producing a generation of athletes who can make a living from the sport. Honda Center, with its 18,000 seats, is a natural destination for that current.

An empty arena still teaches us to hear the pulse of the ball more clearly. If the 2028 Olympics and the rehearsal a year before it can pull that crowd into Anaheim, the real reward lies not in a medal, but in women's volleyball gaining another decade of being seen.
