There are stretches where rate rises while distance per stroke falls, total speed unchanged, energy burn rising. A swimmer fighting the water will incriminate himself through this pair of metrics before the finishing time ever does. Split time is not a number, it is a confession — a confession of how much energy was paid for how many metres of water.

At a youth championship I picked the swimmer with the most beautiful heat split, deviation between 50m segments so small it looked perfect. He lost in the semi-final. The reason sat outside the data: in the heat he swam beside two strong rivals and was forced into an even rhythm; in the semi he swam alone and lost the feel of the water.
